Saturday 6th August was a successful round of fixtures for the Moles with three wins being secured.

The 1st Xl strolled to victory against Ashtead in a return to white ball limited overs cricket. Batting first Ashtead were restricted to 212 for 8 off their 50 overs. Toby Porter took 3fer in a spell which included a superb dismissal of Ashtead’s overseas pro Matthew Breetzke and two other dismissal which were, shall we say, a product of the pressure he’d built throughout his spell. In response, the Moles chased Ashtead’s score with ten overs and five wickets to spare, skipper Nick Stevens scored 73 and Jamie Southgate made 59*. With four games to play the 1s are second in the league, just two points behind Wimbledon.

The 2nd Xl batted first and scored 285 off their fifty overs thanks to 120 from Ollie Jennings in just his second game for the 2nd Xl. Ollie has made the seamless transition from the ‘rustic’ 3rd team pitches to the more batter-friendly 2nd Xl pitches. His superb performances this season are even more impressive when you consider the imperfect relationship between gingers and heatwaves. He is turning out to be Australia’s finest export since Russell Crowe first graced our screens. Dom Reed scored a quick 59 before Ashtead were dismissed for just 172 thanks to 3fers from Henry Glynn and Joe Akhurst.

The 3rd Xl stormed to victory against Weybridge. Bowling first we dismissed Weybridge for 106 with Olly Mills taking 3fer. The score was chased in just 14.4 overs with Billy Dawson scoring 32* off just 15 balls.

Now to the 4th Xl, the 4s lost their first Surrey Championship game since 2019, the first official defeat of Jon Akhurst’s reign. Bowling first we restricted Staines & Laleham 3rd Xl to 133 all out. Jack Crowther continued the form he’s consistently shown across all formats this year and took 3fer. Staines & Laleham 3s were unable to prevent the inevitable wickets of Keenan Carelse who also picked up 3fer. In response the 4s could only manage to get 118 before being bowled out. A defeat of a behemoth which has been as dominant as the 4s feels like the fall of the Rome, like Napoleon at Waterloo, but Molers must remember that the 4s still have breathing space at the top of the league and, providing availability remains strong, can cruise to league victory.

The 5th Xl fell to a narrow defeat against Weybridge 4th Xl. Batting first Weybridge were bowled out for 197 thanks to Luke Sullivan taking 4fer and Oscar Dorman taking 3fer. In response the 5s were bowled out for 178, James Eggleton made 35.

As we approach the final four games of the season, the 1s and 2s are very much in the hunt and the 4s remain top of the league. Our most successful ever season in senior cricket is not beyond the realm of possibility…
